Don’t Overstay Your Welcome: The 3-Year Career Cycle

We’re talking about a crucial concept that can revolutionize your career, family life, and calling. I like to call it “Learn it, Master it, Give it away.”

You know, if you hang around a party too long, it gets embarrassing when the host goes to bed, and the lights get turned off. The same principle applies to our careers and life missions. So, how do we stay ahead of change and avoid being asked to ‘leave the party’? Let’s dive into these three key steps.

1. Learn it:

This is where it all begins. In the first year of any new role or project, you’re in learning mode. You’re soaking up knowledge, asking questions, and figuring out how things work. It’s an exciting time, full of growth and discovery.

2. Master it:

By year two, you should be hitting your stride. You’re not just competent; you’re becoming an expert. You understand the nuances of your role and can teach others. This is when you really start adding value.

3. Give it away:

Here’s where many of us stumble. By year three, you should be looking to delegate or hand off what you’ve mastered. Why? Because if anyone else can do it, it’s not your core mission. Your goal is to focus on what only you can do – your unique blend of talent, passion, and purpose.

Remember, this isn’t just about your career. It applies to your family life and your calling too. It’s about continuous growth and making space for new challenges and opportunities.

So, where are you in this process? Let’s break it down:

– If you’re over 60, most of your career from the first 40 years should be in someone else’s hands by now. You should be focused on your unique contributions and mentoring others.

– If you’re over 40, the day of standing up adults is coming quickly. Start thinking about what you can delegate and what new skills you need to learn.

– If you’re under 40, keep learning and mastering. But also start practicing the art of giving away tasks that others can do.

This cycle isn’t about becoming unemployed or irrelevant. It’s about staying at the cutting edge of your potential. It’s about continually moving towards your true calling and purpose.

So here’s your call to action: Take a hard look at where you are in your business, family, and calling. What are you learning? What have you mastered? And most importantly, what can you give away to make room for growth?

Remember, in The Master’s Program, we’re all about helping you live out your calling to the fullest. Don’t let yourself get stuck in a role you’ve outgrown. Keep learning, keep mastering, and keep giving away. That’s how you stay relevant, impactful, and fulfilled.

Until next time, keep growing and making a difference that will matter forever!

In your corner,
Jeff
