Where Is Your Home Country?

Hi, I’m Jeff Gerhardt, CEO of Priority Living and Coach of The Master’s Program. I have a story to tell you.

Some time ago, I jumped into a taxicab in Amman, Jordan. Having lived and worked overseas, I was, thankfully, used to the fast and aggressive driving that comes with foreign transportation. If not, I would have had trouble thinking of much else. As we sped away from the airport, I struck up a conversation with my driver. It’s become my habit to use this opportunity to inquire about the state of their path to God.

On this late night trip, I asked my driver his name. Located where we were, he surprised me by sharing a non standard Islamic or Arab based name. It sounded more Jewish to me. So, I asked him about it.

He explained that he was an Iranian-Jew. Say what?! That’s like saying I’m from the Los Angeles-Yankees. The two things don’t go together. And yet, here he was. He explained further that he was a Persian-Jew.

Now, remember back to the time of the Jewish exile to the Persian Empire. At some point, the Jews were allowed to return and rebuild. However, they didn’t all return. In fact, some stayed in the Persian Empire and made lives for themselves there until it was no longer viable.

This week while you’re anticipating news headlines, I have two questions for you.

Where is your home country?
Is that where your hope is anchored?

As citizens of the Kingdom, our mindset has been changed. Our object is to live as aliens and strangers passing through, preparing for our forever home. The current times may rattle or challenge our Christian perspective. Do you remain uncomfortable as an alien or do you compromise for comfort and accept the world’s norms?

What if we didn’t get comfortable in Persia and instead eagerly awaited the time to go home to the place that’s being prepared for us? How would that change our daily living and feelings?

Leaders keep vision alive by dreaming of the outcomes. We’ve always recommended the book, “Heaven” by Randy Alcorn. Pull it out just to read one chapter. Look at the index and select one that’s interesting and read it.

Paul wrote in Colossians 3:

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.”

Lean in and keep your hope based in your home country, “Where Christ is”. This will lead to the outcome that won’t disappoint.

In your corner,
Jeff

  1. Thanks, Jeff! I pulled out “Heaven” by Randy Alcott today (audiobook version). It’s been an immediate encouragement to hear and think about “things above”. My home country.
