Is Now Your Next Calling?

What’s the right time for your calling?

Seasons change — graduations, career shifts, family milestones — but are you ready for what’s next? Timing is everything and knowing when to move forward, or let go, can make or break your fruitfulness.

A few years ago, my wife Heather was wrestling with God. “What do You want me to do now?” she prayed. Over and over, Heather heard one word: “Anything.” It frustrated her — she wanted direction, not a riddle. She kept praying and kept hearing , “Anything.” Then, she glanced at her nightstand. There sat Anything by Jennie Allen, unread. It was no coincidence. That book sparked a journey — leading women, coaching, and launching her podcast. God’s timing wasn’t random; it was a call to step into a new season of impact.

At Priority Living, through The Master’s Program, we coach that calling unfolds through seasons. But here’s the problem: we misjudge timing. We cling to old roles, fearing what’s next, or rush ahead before we’re ready. Ever asked, “What am I ready for right now?” or “What must I let go of to move on?” These are real questions, whether you’re a graduate, a parent watching your child graduate, or a leader sensing a shift. Misread the season, and you’ll stall—fruitless, stuck, or frantic.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” God’s timing aligns your calling with His purpose, but it requires discernment. In TMP, we use DreamStaging—a process to map out timing for your calling across family, marriage, career, and desires. It’s about asking, “Now or later?” and trusting God’s rhythm.

So, how do you navigate the seasons of your calling? Three steps:

Step 1: Assess Your Season. Where are you now — getting ready, going for it, stuck, or transforming to the next? Is it time to gear up for what’s coming? What’s the point of no return where you’re committed to go forward? If you’re going for it, how long will this season last (it’s not forever)? Stuck and craving change? Decide if reliving the past is what you want or if jumping into the cocoon to transform is best. If transforming, let this transitory time do its work in you.

Step 2: Let Go to Move Forward. Every season requires release — old roles, habits, even successes. My wife let go of needing a “perfect” plan to embrace “anything.” Ask: What’s holding me back from God’s next step? It might be a job, fear, or comfort zone.

Step 3: Listen for God’s Timing. Pray, journal, seek input from trusted sources. God speaks through His Word, circumstances, even books on your nightstand. DreamStaging helps you test “now or later,” ensuring you’re fruitful now while preparing for what’s next.

You don’t need to know the future to live your calling — just the next step. TMP’s Role Design coaches you to steward time and gifts for eternal impact, season by season. Across this series, we’ve explored calling in careers, as executives, entrepreneurs, parents, and through your brand. Each is about fruitfulness — loving God, loving people, making disciples — timed for God’s seasons.

This week, take 30 minutes. Journal: “What season am I in — getting ready, going for it, stuck, or transforming to the next? What must I let go of to move forward?” Ask these for your marriage, career, calling, and family. List one step to prepare for the season’s timing — releasing a role or starting a venture. Pray for discernment.

My wife’s “Anything” moment showed me that God’s timing isn’t a riddle — it’s a revelation. Don’t cling to yesterday or rush tomorrow. Step into God’s season, and watch your calling bear fruit that lasts.

In your corner,
Jeff
