Do You Know Your Purpose to Persist Through the Days Ahead?

It was July 1863. The first three days of that month saw the Battle of Gettysburg fought in Pennsylvania. Amidst the monuments and memories that remain, many died; men and women who never saw past their early 20s, young adults who would never become parents. Yet, they died with great purpose during a time of great upheaval, and conflict.

I’m here at the National Cemetery in Gettysburg, PA, where Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address in November of 1863. What I want you to understand is that the men and women who died here died with purpose. No one can deny that so much of what’s happening in our world is quite unnerving. In fact, we may have tough days ahead, and that’s not because we’re pessimistic. To the contrary, we live with tons of hope. But what I want you to think about as I’m looking at all these graves is this:

Do you have the purpose that you need to persist?

Finding your purpose is not a bonus, it’s a necessity. It’s what will keep you going, even in the face of adversity. It’s what will give you the strength to persist and to overcome the challenges that are ahead.

I remember recently seeing a statue of Billy Graham placed in the US Capitol, that statue represented this great man from his home state of North Carolina. What struck me was that your leadership is at center stage when your heroes are statues and stories. And what that means for us these days is that it’s our turn. It’s your turn to lead. But your purpose must be in place because why would you persist during difficult times absent purpose?

In Session 12, we talk about how hard times create good men, good men create good times, good times create bad men, and bad men create hard times – a cycle that repeats itself. We’re in an era in which bad men are working to create bad times. In those bad times ahead of us, who will we be?

I believe that someday, in eternity, there will be monuments and memories that persist forever, reminding us of the great things those historical men and women did.

In The Master’s Program, we help you find that purpose, something that will draw you past your career and kids, leading you to the greatest and grandest adventure of your life. So, consider – are you being fruitful? Do you know your calling? Do you have your purpose?

In your corner,
Jeff

  1. Good encouragement here! Thanks, we need to be living with the end in mind. “A good name is better than fine perfume, and the day of death better than the day of birth. It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of everyone; the living should take this to heart.”
    ‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭7‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭NIV‬‬
I hope many men from TMP are worthy of monuments here but even more so in eternity.
