A Commandment with A Promise

Do you know which of the 10 Commandments was the first to include a promise?

In Exodus 20:12, the fifth commandment states, “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”

As a parent, I was raising my own children while functioning in an operating system that was handed down, totally unaware that I was inflicting mother wounds.

In Session 4, we take a deep dive into FAMILY as we talk about the accountability we have for the relationships God has entrusted us with.  This Session was a disruptor in my life. As a mother, I was running fast and furious in the marketplace and didn’t leave much space for studying my children and creatively loving and nurturing them. It was a total replay of my own life. Growing up, I was a latch-key kid in Canada. My parents worked hard to provide for us well and were active both in business ownership and governmental roles.

Later, as a young working parent, I discovered I was also raising my own children to become latch-key kids. Until Session 4 I had never looked through the lens of Best Days or Extra Curricular Design as their headmaster. I am eternally grateful that I still had time to reverse the curse. My sons were 7 and 15 as I emerged into this new awareness. After a difficult, but, heartfelt discussion with my husband, we both agreed I would find a new way to work from home.

Sometimes I feel haunted about the way I raised my sons in their earlier years, but, I did the best that I knew, with what I had. The awesome part is that I learned the NEW and LIVING way. After repentance, God has a miraculous way of restoring what the moth has destroyed and what the locusts have eaten. (Joel 2:25)
My own parents did the best they could with what they knew also.

Back to the fifth commandment; to bestow honor on your parents is to regard them with high respect or great esteem. For some, this may be quite challenging; however, it does not change God’s Word or His conditional promise.

I look forward to honoring my mother this year!  Besides sending her flowers on Mother’s Day, I am sharing a copy of Best Days Worksheet with her. I want my mom to imagine the best day for just the two of us. I will get to help fulfill it this summer.

How about you? How will you honor your mother or perhaps a spiritual mother in your life?

We’re in your corner,
Nadya
