Do you know the will of God and are you doing it?

Do you know the will of God and are you doing it?

How do you know and do the will of God? Is it possible to discern where He’s going and what He’s asking you to do?

Last November I was approached by Priority Living and asked to lead the Men’s Coaching team of The Master’s Program. It didn’t seem like the right timing. I was fully engaged with my City Planning role in Santa Barbara, keeping businesses afloat through strategies like outdoor dining. Although I have been a coach for The Master’s Program since 2014, I didn’t think it was time to be more fully engaged.

God thought differently. He gave me a dream one night that clearly directed me to say “Yes” to the new Master’s Program role.  Without giving it another thought, I knew I was all in and said yes to what God was doing.  As it turned out, that decision was a game changer.  I had no way of knowing at the time what would be in store for me in the coming months.  God did. And following His lead made all the difference.

How does that happen? How do we get good at seeing where God is going and what He wants us to do?

Well, in The Master’s Program in Session 2, we talk about developing a healthy Spirit.  We use the book, Experiencing God: Knowing and Doing the Will of God, by Henry and Richard Blackaby.  In the book, the authors walk us through scripture to discover the process of the Trinity’s engagement with us.

Here’s a short summary:

  1. God is at work.  He’s doing something.  As Jesus says in John 5:17, “My Father is working until now, and I myself am working.”
  2. We walk in relationship with Him.  We seek Him out and abide in His words.
  3. God invites us by showing us what He is doing and where He is going.
  4. God speaks to us and asks us to join Him in what He’s doing.
  5. We experience a “Crises of Belief.” Typically, when God asks us to join Him, it requires us to take a risk to do so.
  6. We adjust our plans and/or behaviors.  In order to believe God’s invitation and follow His lead, we must often make an adjustment in our lives.  Trusting God feels like taking a risk.  At the time, the required life adjustment can look like a sacrifice.   In this place, we learn to overcome the doubts of the enemy.
  7. We experience God through obedience.  In this process of hearing God through relationship, responding to His invitation, and walking in obedience, we experience God’s provision and realize His providence.  We come to realize that what seemed like risk, is really opportunity and blessing.

Since graduating in from The Master’s Program in 2007, I have had the opportunity to go this process countless times!  Our Father is so patient with us and precise with His timing.  Each time we take a risk and decide to follow Him, our faith expands.

Our prayer is that you would be in this place of knowing and doing God’s will.  May you experience all that He has for you today and in LifeMission – that special assignment He is calling only you to do.

If you’re not in this place, consider joining us in The Master’s Program.  For me, this three-year journey continues to be the most significant and fruitful investment ever.  It has become the framework of practicing Life Mastery and ensures that I’m on LifeMission, following where the Father is leading.

We are in your corner!

  1. This was one of the best yet. Well done Rob. You can’t be the setting along the shore of the ocean. I am glad you said yes to God’s call to be the director of TMP Men’s coaches. It is great to have you on the team. Steve
