Eternity is challenging to grasp. Our human minds struggle with the concept. Living for millions of years seems otherworldly. And, of course, it is.
For over 500 years, the grace doctrine has helped Christians feel secure in their eternal destiny. Martin Luther helped us see that our entrance into heaven was through grace alone. No ongoing penitence from the pope required.
But the doctrine of grace has tended to eclipse your status in heaven and how you prepare for it. Jesus and the original apostles were clear: what you do here on earth will determine how you spend millions of years in eternity.
The apostle Paul describes in 1 Corinthians 3 that your work here on earth will be tested with fire. He metaphorically describes that people produce gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, and straw. He says our work will be tested with fire. What remains is our reward. If nothing is left, Paul says you will suffer loss but live as one escaping through fire.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want that!
God is a rewarder of those who steward what He has placed in their control. Jesus says that reward is for eternity. He recommends we provide purses for ourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail (Luke 12:33).
But this requires our focused attention on eternity. You will have the wrong focus if your endgame and fear is your death date. The cares of this world, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the desires for other things will distract you from endeavors with eternal reward.
What are you living for? Are you struggling to have the best earthly existence possible for the next 20 to 30 years? Or are you fixing your eyes on the heavenly prize?
Getting practical – how would you change your focus? What adjustments would you make?
For starters, meditate on eternity. Ask the Father to describe it for you. Research books that show what the bible has to say about it. Randy Alcorn’s book, Heaven, is a great start.
Next, judge your expenditure of time, talent, and treasure based on heavenly outcomes. Are you spending it here or leveraging it there? Will your next investment survive death and live with you in eternity? Is this a gold, silver, or precious stone investment? Or, will this burn up in your transition from here to there?

Great reminder. Thanks Rob. I shared the video with a few of my friends and family. This is a message we need to deeply consider.
Thanks Adam! I find it requires constant refocus. I often wonder what would change if we were completely sold out
for eternity!
