Did you know that Christ has a new name for you? Have you received yours in Him? God has given you a Kingdom LifeMission and in that mission He has a new name for you! The meaning of your new name most likely contains the herald of your LifeMission.
We find God and Jesus renaming people in the Bible. Why do they do this? Could it be that the Trinity has a new name for you? Jesus says in Revelation 2:17:
“Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.“
In TMP, Session 9, we explored the concept of your new name. Your new name is critical to your LifeMission. Commonly, God and Jesus include a person’s mission, promise, or purpose in the meaning of a new name.
To Abram, God said that he will be father of many nations. God renamed Abram to Abraham, which means father of many nations. God placed the promise in the meaning of Abraham’s new name. Why?
Like all spoken words, names have meaning. God creates with His spoken word. Every time your name is spoken, it’s like someone is proclaiming the meaning of your new name. God and Jesus renamed people so that the spoken word would be aligned with their assigned mission. As we say in Session 9 of TMP, your new name is about you living your true self as opposed to the false self you may have received through the work of the enemy.
Jacob means trickster. We saw this play out in his story as Jacob tricked his brother, Esau out of his birth right. God renames Jacob, Israel, which means one who wrestles with God. This name is now heralded over an entire nation of Israel.
We often speak in TMP of Simon Peter’s development as a leader. Jesus transitioned Simon from a fisherman to a “fisher of men.” Jesus casts a clear vision for Simon’s destiny and then renames him Peter. Peter means rock. Jesus said to Peter in the presents of others, “you are Peter, and upon this rock, I will build my Church.” (Matt. 16:18) Jesus placed Peter’s LifeMission in his new name.
After attending Session 9 under Bob Shank, I asked Holy Spirit to reveal my new name. About 6 months later I received it during a morning time with Him. The word for my new name is not English, but its meaning is: his worth is found in God. This new information about who God says I am, created a great advancement for me. It focused my attention on my purpose: to help leaders find and live their unique calling so that they can change the world around them. It clarified that the value I have to offer others is found in my relationship with God.
Last week at Session 9 in San Luis Obispo, we had 3 men receive their new names. One guy had a name he did not recognize pop into his mind. He looked it up on Google and found that it is a Hebrew name. It’s meaning was completely aligned with his previous conversations with God about his purpose.
How about you? Have you asked Holy Spirit to reveal your new name and its meaning? I pray that in Jesus’ name you would receive what He calls you and that it would empower you to focus on your LifeMission. May your heart move in thankfulness this Christmas Season as we walk together in Kingdom purpose.
We are in your corner,
Rob Dayton
