The Shortcut to LifeMastery

The Master’s Program community is all about the pursuit of LifeMastery.  We are taking our God-given authority to manage our individually assigned responsibilities in 10 areas.  If any shortcut exists, for me, this is the closest thing to it.  In all my years of pursuing LifeMastery, this one strategy has been the single most consistently effective LifeMastery tool…

Proverbs 23:7 says, “As a man thinks in his heart, so he is.”  The concept: how you think will eventually lead to your destiny.  It all starts with a thought.  Your thoughts lead to the words you speak.  Your words become actions.  Actions become habits.  Habits form your character.  Your character leads to your destiny.  Do you want to change the trajectory of your destiny?  Change what you’re thinking!

The Apostle Paul affirms this approach of LifeMastery, gospel living.  He says, “do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2a).  Change your mind, change your destiny.

But how?  What’s the secret of mind transformation?  Practical strategy please!

This is it for me: journal your thoughts.

What distinguishes humans from animals is the capacity to think about what we are thinking about.  Don’t casually pass by this powerful tool God has given us.  Putting this into practice takes a pen and paper and your commitment to write.  Follow these steps:

  1. Paint a target for your new thought.

How do you want to think? What’s the mindset you want? What mindset do you feel God inviting you to change?  You may be automatically thinking sinful thoughts.  How would you define the opposite, heavenly thought?  Examples: a thankful mindset. A loving mindset. A joyful mindset. A mindset full of grace and forgiveness. Maybe you’d like to put an end to lustful, hateful, or judgmental thoughts?  Maybe your target is simply to have more control of your thoughts?  Perhaps you’d like to take Paul’s advice to “take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5).  The fruits of the Spirit list is a great list of target thoughts!

  1. Journal your thoughts every day for a minimum of 21 days.

Use your journal to write in the morning about how you plan on thinking today, and at the end of the day, journal how your new thinking went.  I write in conversation style to a specific member of the Trinity.  This is important.  The Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit are each invested about how you think.  They’re inviting you into mindsets that are full of freedom.  Write about your thought journey. If you hear Them prompt or encourage you, write it down.

  1. Fail well.

Changing the way you think does not come quickly.  You will fail.  You will likely fail frequently.  God the Father is not surprised or deterred by your failure.  Jesus paid for it.  Don’t be discouraged by failure; rather, be excited by the transformation process.  With consistent journaling you will see progression.  Every day you will become more and more conscientious of your new thinking – closer and closer to the moment you fail. It’s time to get excited when you are actively thinking about your new thoughts in the moment of failure.  This means you are close to living your new thought!

We learned this process in Session 3: Growth is Not a Miracle… It’s a Process.  Active and consistent journaling of your targeted desired thought is the most effective strategy I know for mind transformation – the process of moving from conscious incompetence to unconscious competence.

The Trinity is inviting you to get an upgrade in the way you think.  Grab a journal and indulge in this powerful mind transformation tool.  I’m excited to hear about your new, heavenly mindset!

In your corner,

Rob Dayton
