 Show me your focus

Tell me your focus; I’ll tell you where you’re going!

The Master’s Program mantra is Balance – Margin – Focus.  But what does Focus practically look like?  How do I know I’m on target?  In a world that seems to offer increasingly distracting doomsday decoys, you can thrive in what the Trinity has called you to do.  The major limiting factor: your focus.

Mountain biking can be compared to life.  You’re flying down a mountain at 20-25 MPH with twists, turns and obstacles in your way.  The novice rider focuses on the obstacles.  He sees a rock in the path up ahead and locks laser eyes on it to avoid it.  The problem?  What your focused on is where you’re going.  He’s almost guaranteed to hit the rock!

The same is true with life.  Your focus is your direction.  So what are you focused on?  That’s where you’re going.  Your focus is how you are renewing your mind.  Your focus becomes your attitude.  Your focus determines what you say and do.  Focus is everything!  So let me ask again: what are you focused on?

The follower of Jesus is focused first on His promises giving birth to one’s true identity.  Promises that say you are a royal priesthood, a son of a loving Father; that you have the indwelling of a powerful Holy Spirit; that you carry faith, hope, love, and peace living inside you.  We need to focus on these promises to live like it!  Everything changes for the good when we focus on these truths.

Our second focus is on Jesus’ instruction on how to live life.  I believe that begins with His call for us to focus on forgiveness of those who have wronged us.  We are to focus on reconciliation, seeing others as the Father sees them.  We are to focus on serving, giving, and meeting the needs of others.

And finally, we focus on our LifeMission.  God created us with potential and passion for a God-honoring purpose.  When we continually redirect our focus on what we were created to do, we clearly see the on-ramps of opportunity.  We get to live a life worthy of our calling.

But when we focus on what the world is bringing with an intravenous feed to CNN or Fox, we invite anxiety.  When we focus on the lies the enemy feeds us, we invite self-destruction.  When we focus on “the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things” (Mark 4:19), our Kingdom LifeMission is not in the picture.  We tend to miss the constant flow of opportunity the Holy Spirit brings our way.

Change your current direction with this one simple step:  change your focus.  Today is the day to focus on what the Trinity is doing in you and through you.  May you be blessed in this endeavor.

We are in your corner,

Rob Dayton
