What does tomorrow hold? What will happen next? Can culture be more confused than it is today? In short, yes. It can and probably will. Historically, war has been an inevitable outcome of our current generational season.
Uncertainty is more stressful than certain doom.
A study was performed on people who received an electrical shock. The study found that recipients were more stressed if they had a 50% chance of being shocked than if they knew 100% that they would be shocked. People can cope with what they know will happen but struggle with what they don’t.
As we move through this season of uncertainty, we must spend time focusing on what is certain: our identity. Please don’t change your pronouns, but your identity is “they”.
So many Christians today seem helpless and lost. Like scared children, they impatiently wait to be rescued by the return of Jesus. To be sure, we hope for Christ’s physical return. But the rescue operation already happened with His resurrection. You have been unified with Christ. It is you that no longer lives but Him in you.
You are no longer human. You are a supernatural being that has been transformed. The House of God is not the building in which you worship. It’s us!
Most think of the Holy Spirit dwelling in them alone. But Jesus said in John 14:23, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” Your identity is now one with God, three in one.
No other concept on planet Earth is more powerful than this. But it is only useful if it is genuinely believed. It requires a renewed mind to practically be lived out. How can we transform our thinking with this reality in uncertain times?
The first step is to obey the teaching of Jesus. It’s a pretty short list of about 55 commands. Grab a gospel and start making a list. This one exercise transformed my life completely. To follow Jesus is to live out His teaching. To live out His teaching is to become more like Him.
The second step is to know who you are. Deep focus is required to change your thinking and rewire your brain from worry to certainty. You might have heard about meditation. Some believe it to be too new age. Focused meditation has been a part of the Church for a millennia before evil took hold of it. It is simply spending time focused on one thing. In this case, the Trinity dwelling in you.
Spend 15 minutes a day for a month, focusing on the presence of God dwelling in you. It won’t be easy at first. Your mind will wonder. Bring your attention back to the presence of God living in you. Love dwells in you. Peace dwells in you. Abundant joy dwells in you. May you believe it to your core!
You can’t live out your identity in Christ before believing it. Become confident about who you are.
This season and times are genuinely uncertain. They require a Church that fully embraces and lives its identity. Change your focus and transform your world. You are the light of the world because He is dwelling in you.
In your corner,
Rob
