I Saw An Angel!

I Saw An Angel!

I have never seen an angel, but many have told me they have. People usually tell me someone somehow came out of the blue and helped or lifted them up. “It must have been an angel!” they might say.

In Biblical times, angels were ordinary. In both the Old Testament and the New Testament, angels played a role. When an angel busted Peter out of jail in Jerusalem, he went to a house where others were gathered praying for his release.

A servant girl named Rhonda came to the door. When she heard Peter’s voice, she ran to tell everyone. The people thought Rhonda was out of her mind. They told her it was probably Peter’s angel that she heard at the door.

Did you get that?! They thought it was more likely that Peter’s angel was at the door than Peter himself!

In The Master’s Program, we don’t talk much about angels, but we do insist that people transform their thinking and live a life of love. Radical love can look like an angel. The experience of love demonstrated by Jesus benefits the giver as well as the receiver.

This morning, I called an Uber and jumped in the back seat, saying, “Hey there, Marcos, how are you?!” I had my typical giant smile on. His reaction was startling. “I have driven people around for nearly 30 years,” he said. “I get smiling people only one percent of the time!” He said I made his day.

This was no angel encounter. It was just me coming in like a love bomb, ready to be excited about the image-bearer Uber driver. But, I was surprised by his “only one percent” comment.

Sometimes, I wonder if some of those angel encounters are just people who have cultivated so much love for others that they see a need or an opportunity to love.

How about you? Do you exhibit behaviors that could be mistaken for an angel?

Jesus said, “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another (John 13:35).”  You don’t need a Christian bumper sticker. You need to cultivate radical love for others.

It does take practice. We are in a season of division and constant slanderous mudslinging. Cultivate love behaviors beyond your Christian friend group. Learn to light up when you see people and be ready to meet their needs.

Monitor the stories your mind is telling you about others. Are the stories about their character or their circumstances? Rewire your brain to see the main character of people being created in the image of God.

Demonstrate that you are a member of the Body of Christ. Love people. You might get mistaken for an angel!

In your corner,
Rob
